The Passenger comes to Seventh Street

From the geniuses at The Gibson and Cork, The Passenger bar is set to open later this month at the Warehouse Theater (1021 Seventh Street). Bartenders Derek Brown and brother Tom will team up for the first time to bring us a ‘saloon with an upscale, cocktail and sanctuary atmosphere’ note the Going Out Gurus at the Washington Post. And yes, the bar will sport a Pullman-style decor complete with arched ceiling and gilt mirrors.

The Warehouse Theater, located between K and L on 7th Street by the Convention Center, will still house a concert space and jazz club (incorporating Warehouse Next Door), but the main entrance will move around the corner giving The Passenger the entrance on 7th Street.

We’re thrilled with the new addition, which seems like it might go a long way in bridging the gap between other bars and restaurants in Penn Quarter and along 14th Street. With Againn having recently opened on 11th Street and The Space located just a bit North on N Street, the Passenger will hopefully have a natural niche market in the high-rise tenants that abound on nearby Mass. Ave.

Also apparently in the works by the brothers Brown? The Columbia Room, set to open in early 2010.

For The Gibson, lines at the door are just not acceptable. In fact, they don’t even want to tell you where the door is located. Instead, patrons are either flat-out refused entry or are offered a chance to leave their phone numbers where they can be reached if a bar stool or table opens up.

We happen to prefer this up-front, no excuses kind of approach. It’s like the “he’s just not that into you” of the bar scene. Either you’re in, or you’re not. End of story.

But to help ease the pain of so many being turned away, The Gibson has decided to give us just a few more seats by opening an upstairs level. The bar will nearly double in size when the upstairs level opens this weekend and will feature two private rooms that can be rented in advance.

They’ll be kicking off the whole thing at their Corpse Revival Halloween Party, which, for $75 for the night will include cocktails and snacks (also a new addition)from 8:30pm to 2:30am.
